Vikings right tackle Brian O’Neill finally takes reps in team drills

The plan for the Vikings has always been to bring right tackle Brian O’Neill along slowly. He’s working his way back from a partially torn Achilles tendon, and while O’Neill probably would have gone 100 mph as soon as he was allowed, head coach Kevin O’Connell noted at the start of training camp that the team would be cautious. So, it’s been a gradual ramp up for O’Neill, who started by working off to the side by himself, then progressed into individual drills on a limited basis. The biggest step in the recovery process so far came on Sunday afternoon as O’Neill participated in team drills for the first time.“I’m feeling really good,” he said. “I was really excited. Just trying to follow the plan that they’ve got for me. I’m starting to shake some rust off.”Though it’s still unclear whether O’Neill will participate in joint practices against the Tennessee Titans this week, it appears heR...Twins pitchers shut down frustrated Phillies hitters in 2-0 win

PHILADELPHIA — Sonny Gray tossed two-hit ball over six shutout innings, reliever Caleb Thielbar pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and Jordan Luplow homered to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The American League Central leaders bounced back from a 13-2 loss on Friday to win the last two games of the series. Gray (6-5) struck out seven and pitched into the sixth inning for the eighth straight time. He allowed just two singles and otherwise quieted a Phillies’ offense that had hit 20 homers over the last eight games.“Overall nice outing for him,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “I think his command was good. We’ve probably seen it better for him, but he attacked. … When you attack and get ahead, good things generally do follow.”Yet after 80 pitches, that was enough for Gray, and it almost cost the Twins.Griffin Jax allowed two singles and hit a batter to load the bases with one out and to send the Philly...Marin launches tri-county effort to reduce coastal pollution

After coastal communities were overwhelmed by visitors — and their garbage — during the pandemic, Marin and two Northern California counties have joined forces to stem the pollution.A three-year campaign, known as the “Cleaner California Coast” initiative, seeks to expand the “leave-no-trace” message often used at national and state parks to all coastal areas of Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino counties.Whether someone is staying at a rental property in Stinson Beach or hiking in a national park, campaign proponents said the intent is to have people pack away any waste they generate or to prevent waste by using reusable or compostable items.“It’s kind of a simple message: If you’re at the coast, come prepared,” said Marin County Parks and Open Space communications manager Cristina Torresan. The initiative will begin in earnest this year, first gaining community-level support and partners and eventually growing into a larger marketing campaign. INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Six years ago the Los Angeles Chargers had an undrafted rookie running back from a small Colorado college make the roster after a great preseason.Could the Bolts strike twice? Elijah Dotson certainly hopes so.Dotson had 92 yards on six carries, including two long touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the Chargers’ 34-17 victory over the Los Angeles Rams Saturday night.Dotson, who went to Northern Colorado and signed with the Chargers after going undrafted, got a motivational pep talk from someone who was once in the same situation. Austin Ekeler is going into his seventh season in Los Angeles after signing as an undrafted rookie out of Western Colorado.Having Ekeler as a mentor isn’t a bad thing considering he leads the NFL with 38 scrimmage touchdowns over the past two seasons and was the fifth running back in league history last season to have at least 100 catches in a year.“He was like ‘Don’t do too much. You don’t have to be a superstar. Just t...NASCAR Cup Series Verizon 200 at the Brickyard Results

MIAMI (AP) — Jake Burger’s game-ending single capped a five-run, ninth-inning comeback against Clay Holmes and Tommy Kahnle, giving the Miami Marlins an 8-7 win Sunday over the struggling New York Yankees.New York, which led 7-1 in the sixth inning behind ace Gerrit Cole, dropped five games back of the AL’s last wild card berth and is on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The Yankees lost when leading by four runs in the ninth inning for the first time since July 11, 2021. New York is 3-8-1 in its last 12 series and has lost six straight rubber games of three-game series.Burger, who had three hits, cut the deficit to 7-2 with an RBI single in the sixth off Cole. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Michael McDowell raced to his second NASCAR crown jewel victory Sunday, dominating the Brickyard 200 — and putting himself in the playoffs for the second time in three years. The 38-year-old Arizona driver who has made more than 450 career starts beat Chase Elliott across the yard of bricks by 0.937 seconds in the road-course race that had only one yellow flag. Pole winner Daniel Suarez was third as the regular season winds down.McDowell, also the 2021 Daytona 500 winner, gave Front Row Motorsports its fourth victory.“We did it, we won Indy,” he shouted into the radio. “So thankful.”McDowell made it look easy this time, too, winning the first stage, finishing behind only Denny Hamlin in the second stage and then inheriting the lead on Lap 54 during a round of pit stops and never trailed again. He led a career-best 54 laps in the 82-lap race.He had to sneak through traffic following a wild crash to win at Daytona.“These guys gave me everything today,” he said. “We ...Shohei Ohtani’s 41st homer leads the Angels to a 2-1 win over the Astros

HOUSTON (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit his AL-leading 41st homer, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Houston Astros 2-1 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.Ohtani’s first home run since Aug. 3 put the Angels up 2-0 in the sixth inning. Houston cut it to 2-1 in the bottom half, but the Angels finally got some help from their pitching staff after losing each of the first two games of the series 11-3. Their bullpen pitched three scoreless innings to secure the win.Ohtani’s big hit came after the Angels announced the two-way star would skip his next scheduled mound start Wednesday at Texas after telling manager Phil Nevin he was feeling arm fatigue.Nevin said Sunday that Ohtani is not injured and will return to the rotation during a home series against Cincinnati that begins Aug. 21.Los Angeles starter Chase Silseth (4-1) allowed four hits and struck out five in five scoreless innings. Carlos Estévez struck out two in the ninth for his 25th save. Houston’s José Urquidy (2-3) yielded three ...Latest news
