EU climate chief Frans Timmermans set to lead left-wing alliance into Dutch elections

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:14:29 GMT

DEVENTER, Netherlands — EU climate chief Frans Timmermans is within touching distance of leading an alliance of social democrats and greens into Dutch elections in November after the two parties on Friday nominated him as the sole candidate to be their leader.Senior politicians from both parties have rallied behind the European commissioner, a former Dutch foreign minister, with no other candidates daring to challenge his shot at becoming prime minister. The only remaining step is a vote by members of both parties on August 14, which is viewed as a formality; members can vote for Timmermans or choose “none of the candidates.” The winner will be announced on August 22, at which point Timmermans would have to take a leave of absence from the European Commission, where he acts as one of three executive vice presidents.According to POLITICO’s Poll of Polls, the joint PvdA and GroenLinks list Timmermans is set to lead — newly agreed on July 17 — is polling highest, in...

Polygraphs, scales, and big, big fish: Maryland’s White Marlin Open turns 50 with a record $10.5M in prizes

People craned their necks and held phones up to record video as a group of men looked on proudly, everyone’s eyes fixed on a scale and a tuna, suspended from its tail by a chain. It weighed 247.5 pounds or, measured another way, potentially $1.2 million. The road to Ocean City starts along Eastern Shore state highways lined with gas stations selling live bait and finishes with a drawbridge speckled with fisherman. Every August, the journey culminates in a pot of gold called the White Marlin Open. What started as a tiny venture with few aspirations in 1974 by then-26-year-old Jim Motsko has become the world’s largest bill fishing tournament. It turned 50 this week and celebrated with a record $10.5 million in prizes.Anglers — including NBA legend Michael Jordan competing on the 80-foot yacht Catch 23 (his jersey number) — contributed money toward the pot. They’re all hoping to win it back, and then some.Fishing concludes Friday and lie detector tests are t...

Whirlwind stretch of suspensions, scoreboard snubs and wins have put the Chicago White Sox in the spotlight

The New York Yankees called on reliever Keynan Middleton in the fourth inning Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox.It was the right-hander’s first time facing his former team a few days after saying in an interview with ESPN and the New York Daily News that the Sox clubhouse had “no rules,” which received pushback from general manager Rick Hahn and manager Pedro Grifol. Some observed Middleton’s name was missing from Guaranteed Rate Field’s video board while he was on the mound Wednesday, creating social media buzz.“The omission was not intentional but resulted because of duplicate players listed under one uniform number on MLB’s downloadable Yankees roster,” the Sox said Thursday morning in a statement. “This glitch has arisen from time to time this season when multiple players have worn the same number for a team, and we regret it occurred tonight.”When you’ve had the type of recent stretch — and season R...

Demario Douglas nearly joined notable list of Patriots in preseason debut

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:14:29 GMT

The legend of Patriots rookie wide receiver Demario Douglas will only grow after Thursday night’s preseason opener. After two weeks of impressive play at training camp, the 5-foot-8, 192-pound receiver barely played against the Houston Texans. Douglas started the game but logged just two offensive snaps. He also played one special teams snap, fair catching a punt.In the preseason, a lack of playing time can be a good thing.“We look at the whole body of work here,” Belichick said. “There are a lot of guys who didn’t get a whole lot of reps last night. That’s because most of them got a lot of reps in the practice sessions, more reps in the practice session. I’d say most of the players who played last night have gotten fewer reps in practice sessions. It’s kind of a balance, and the guys that practice less play more and some of the guys who have practiced more played less. Trying to get an evaluation and look at everybody.”Related ArticlesNew England ...

Jalen’s Mills reconversion to safety appears to be going well for Patriots

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:14:29 GMT

FOXBORO — In the search for Devin McCourty’s replacement at safety in the Patriots’ starting defense, Jalen Mills made a strong first impression in Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Houston Texans.Mills has some ground to make up if he’s going to be part of the Patriots’ starting unit for the third straight season, however. The good news is that the eight-year veteran made the Patriots’ top defensive play in Thursday’s loss, undercutting rookie wide receiver Tank Dell in a pass from No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud for an interception.“I was actually in man-to-man with the tight end,” Mills explained. “He was in the backfield, though. It was a longer down and distance, so I kind of showed a two-high look. I think it was Myles Bryant who was next to me. Once the tight end kind of chipped and released through, I knew that I could take him from depth, but I just kept eyes on the quarterback. He just so happened to look to his right and my left, and I was able to get underneat...

Wholesale inflation in US edged up in July from low levels

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 11:14:29 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wholesale price increases in the United States picked up slightly in July yet still suggested that inflationary pressures have eased this year since reaching alarming heights in 2022.The Labor Department reported Friday that its producer price index — which measures inflation before it hits consumers— rose 0.8% last month from July 2022. The latest figure followed a 0.2% year-over-year increase in June, which had been the smallest annual rise since August 2020. On a month-to-month basis, producer prices rose 0.3% from June to July, up from no change from May to June. The producer price figures the Labor Department issued Friday reflect prices charged by manufacturers, farmers and wholesalers. The figures can provide an early sign of how fast consumer inflation will rise in the coming months. Since peaking at 11.7% in March 2022, wholesale inflation has steadily tumbled in the face of the Federal Reserve’s 11 interest rate hikes. On Thursday, the government repo...

UBS ends billions in taxpayer-funded support that paved way for Credit Suisse takeover

GENEVA (AP) — Swiss taxpayers are off the hook from a government-engineered rescue plan that doled out billions to help UBS, the country’s largest bank, take over its ailing rival Credit Suisse.UBS said Friday that it has shut down state support that had made available up to 200 billion Swiss francs (about $230 billion) to help shepherd through its takeover of Credit Suisse to avert an international banking crisis. The Zurich-based banking giant, which completed the takeover on June 12, said it had moved to “voluntarily terminate” rescue programs that aimed to help mop up billions of losses and provide liquidity to the banks as they moved forward on the complex deal.UBS said it had repaid 50 billion francs in loans from the Swiss National Bank as well as loans granted under an offer of up to 100 billion francs in liquidity support from the government. It also said the government’s 9 billion-franc offer to buffer the bank against losses was no longer needed. In total,...
