Why are Oakland’s kids still not in school? Striking teachers say it’s for the ‘common good’

With just 13 days left in the school year, most Oakland classrooms remained empty Monday as striking teachers walked the picket line for a third day — but the impasse is no longer focused on money or benefits.Instead, the Oakland Unified School District and the teachers’ union, the Oakland Education Association, are locked in a dispute over the teachers’ so-called “common good” demands, which seek to address racial equity, homelessness and environmental justice for students across the city. The demands — which include using closed school sites to house homeless students and creating a committee to coordinate reparations for Black students — are not issues that historically have kept children out of the classroom. Now, the dispute is even dividing the six members of the Oakland Unified school board itself: On Monday morning, board members Valarie Bachelor, VanCedric Williams, and Jennifer Brouhard urged the rest of the board to allow the district’s bargaining te...

The San Jose Sharks didn’t quite get the outcome they were looking for during Monday’s NHL Draft Lottery. But it wasn’t the worst result, either. The Sharks did not wind up with the nos. 1 or 2 overall selections, but will instead have the No. 4 overall pick in next month’s NHL Draft in Nashville, Tenn. The Chicago Blackhawks, who finished with the third-worst record in the NHL, won the draft lottery and will have the right to select superstar-in-waiting Connor Bedard. The Anaheim Ducks, who finished last in the NHL, fell to No. 2 and the Columbus Blue Jackets fell one spot to No. 3.The Sharks finished with the NHL’s fourth-worst record at 22-44-16.It is a bit of a break for the Sharks that Bedard will be going to Chicago instead of a Pacific Division rival like the Ducks. The NHL held two lotteries to determine the first and second overall selections, and the Sharks had a 9.5 percent chance of winning one or the other. They also had a 0.3 percent chance of landing at No. 3 and a ...

Ahead of Game 4, Warriors make another starting lineup change vs. Lakers

LOS ANGELES — The Warriors will trot out their third different starting lineup in four games against the Los Angeles Lakers.Gary Payton II, who has been largely out of the rotation in the first three games, will get the starting nod alongside the usuals — Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green at center.“Five years ago we wouldn’t have changed the lineup unless there was an injury,” head coach Steve Kerr said. With all the game-to-game adjustments, things have changed now. The Lakers adjusted in their Game 3 win by having Austin Reaves defend Curry and Jarred Vanderbilt defend Green which, in essence, limited the pick-and-roll opportunities for the Warriors. Starting Payton can be the Warriors’ defensive counter by limiting D’Angelo Russell’s scoring opportunities; Russell scored 13 points in the first quarter last game.“Obviously his defense is excellent,” Kerr said. “He plays like a big but he ...

By Wayne Parry | Associated PressATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Americans have bet over $220 billion on sports with legal gambling outlets in the five years since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for all 50 states to offer it, and the industry shows few signs of slowing despite some recent scandals that have put a spotlight on wagering safeguards. When Sunday’s anniversary of the court ruling in a case brought by New Jersey arrives, two-thirds of the country will offer legal sports betting, with additional states likely to join in coming months or years. The fast-growing industry is also far-reaching: its advertisements reach into most U.S. homes during sporting events and even non-sports programming. Few TV viewers have been spared from repeated ads featuring a Caesar character discussing sports gambling with members of the Manning football dynasty, or from actor Jamie Foxx placing sports bets in between takes on a film set.“While the milestones of legalized sports betting t...
