SAN FRANCISCO — Anthony DeSclafani raised his eyebrows. He knew Monday was Patrick Bailey’s birthday, but he had no idea what age the rookie catcher had turned.“He’s 24? Really?” DeSclafani said. “Jeez.”Bailey is young, but in many ways this birthday showed how he plays beyond his rookie status in the Giants’ 14-4 trouncing of the Pittsburgh Pirates in front of a robust Memorial Day crowd at Oracle Park.First, the highlight plays. Bailey was one of six Giants to record a multi-hit game against Rich Hill and the Pirates bullpen. He was one of two to hit a homer. His second career home run in 10 big league games was his first at Oracle Park and his first as a left-handed hitter. His three-hit day also included a key two-run double (reaching third on an error) in the Giants’ five-run second inning that took some disciplined approach from a less-familiar right side of the plate, shortening his swing to slap Hill’s curveball the o...

ALBANY — Arson and domestic violence investigations are underway after an apartment fire prompted evacuations at a UC Berkeley housing community Monday morning, authorities said.According to the University of California Police Department, officers were called at 10:41 a.m. to a home in the 700 block of Ohlone Avenue at the University Village apartment complex for a report of a family disturbance. Responding officers found two people, one adult and one minor, who were treated on the scene for minor injuries by the Albany Fire Department.During that initial response, officers learned one more resident, also an adult, was still inside, and tried to contact that person. But moments later, they smelled smoke coming from inside the apartment, and both Albany and Berkeley firefighters went into the apartment and rescued the resident.Firefighters limited the fire to the room where it started, but not before three buildings at the complex — 105, 106 and 107 — were fully or ...

Astros mock A's attendance in now-deleted tweet

(KRON) -- The Houston Astros' official Twitter account has deleted a tweet sent Sunday poking fun at the skimpy Oakland A's crowds over the weekend. "10 runs in front of tens of fans," the tweet read. It racked up more than 4,600 retweets, 17,000 likes and seven million views before it was deleted. The team sent out the tweet after Yordan Alvarez smashed his second home run of the day to give Houston a 10-1 lead, putting the finishing touches on a three-game sweep at the Coliseum. Public weighs in on Oakland Athletics’ Las Vegas stadium financing As it has been for much of the season, the Coliseum was mostly empty for the Sunday matinee. There was a reported attendance of 8,809, which makes up 19% of the stadium's capacity. The A's are last in MLB in attendance, drawing an average of 8,886 fans per game. Their pending move to Las Vegas has hurt their numbers -- they have drawn more than 10,000 fans just three times since news broke of the potential move on April 20. Houston got bl...

PHOENIX (AP) — Pavin Smith started this season in Triple-A. Drey Jameson spent a stretch down in Reno, too.The Arizona Diamondbacks’ rapid improvement into one of the better teams in the National League has created competition to stay on the team’s big league roster. Now that Smith and Jameson are back in the majors, they’re playing like guys who intend to stay there.Smith hit a go-ahead, three-run homer, Jameson threw 3 2/3 innings of impressive relief in his return to Arizona and the Diamondbacks rallied for a 7-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday.“It just shows you nothing’s guaranteed,” Jameson said of his two-week demotion to Triple-A. “You’ve got to make pitches, you’ve got to get outs and you’ve got to win ballgames to stay up here. That’s what I’m here to do.”The Diamondbacks stormed back from an early 4-0 deficit with a five-run second inning, punctuated by Smith’s three-run homer to right-center that made it...

AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — The Chennai Super Kings have won the Indian Premier League for a record-equaling fifth time with a last-ball, five-wicket victory over the defending champion Gujarat Titans. Ravindra Jadeja plundered a six and a four from the last two deliveries against Mohit Sharma to help the Super Kings chase down a revised target of 171 runs in 15 overs. The IPL needed three days to complete the final. It was washed out on Sunday, started late Monday and finished after 1:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday. But it was worth it.Chennai was squeezed by medium-pacer Sharma in the last over and the equation got to 10 runs required off two balls. Sharma got his length wrong and Jadeja hit a straight six. Sharma then got his line wrong and Jadeja hit a four to fine leg to complete a stunning win.“I was just thinking I need to swing hard, as much as I can,” Jadeja said. “Where the ball will go, I was not thinking about that. I was backing myself and looking to hit straight, beca...

Federal officials say the MBTA has to address worker safety issues, and do it fast — within the next two months. And commuters are worried about what this means for them.“We don’t need Band-Aids, we need the thing done safely for the people doing the work and the people who have to rely on these things every day,” said Brett Nichols, who rides the MBTA.In a letter to MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng a federal official writes, “Given the immediate risk to worker safety on the ROW (right of way), FTA (the federal transit administration) requires direct and focused actions.”They say a plan submitted by the MBTA earlier this month needs to be redone immediately because it includes fixes not scheduled to be complete until late this year, or next year.
