Lawmakers are vowing to get their constituents out of Israel in the wake of the attacks launched by the militant group Hamas. In a surprise move, Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on Israel on Saturday, which has now left at least 600 dead in Israel and another 300 dead in Gaza. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) said Sunday that he is in touch with constituents who are currently in Israel amid the attacks.“Well, we have been in touch with dozens of constituents who are in Israel currently. Obviously, for their safety and security, I'm not going to get too specific. But we are working with them, as well as the consulate, to try and get them out as quickly as possible,” he said on CNN's “State of the Union.”“Given the situation on the ground, we want to make sure that all of our residents here in the 17th District get home as quickly as possible,” he added.Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) also said that he has been notified by 53 of his own constituents on Sunday, saying that they...5th annual Porchfest DC in Southeast highlights community spirit

Sunday’s fall weather was the perfect way to kick off Porchfest DC’s Southeast edition, with the annual event celebrating its fifth year in the District’s Hillcrest community.Nia Mobley, co-executive director of Porchfest, calls the event fun and entertaining for everyone from “grandparents to toddlers.”Live music played on the front lawns of residential houses lining the street, local artist vendors painted, people jumped rope, and DJ speakers blasted Go-Go music.Longtime Southeast resident John Murphy donned a sweatshirt purchased from a local vendor with the word “Southeast” printed across the front. He said the people at Porchfest are “really engaging.”“Whether you know someone or not, someone will just stop and start chatting with you,” Murphy said. “That’s the kind of energy you get around here.”“We really want the neighbors to get to know each other,” Mobley said. “It builds community.”The free event is intende...Quigley recovers from double bogey to win on PGA Tour Champions

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Brett Quigley had to work a lot harder than he imagined Sunday to win again on the PGA Tour Champions. He recovered from a shocking double bogey with four closing pars for a 1-under 71 and a one-shot victory in the Constellation Furyk & Friends. The stress from that double bogey on the par-3 14th at Timuquana followed him all the way to the 18th hole, where Quigley had to make a sharp-breaking 7-foot par putt to avoid a playoff with Steven Alker.“I was scrambling the whole way in,” Quigley said.He won his first PGA Tour Champions title more than three years ago in Morocco — in his second start on the 50-and-older circuit. He had to wait 79 starts for the next victory. Quigley finished at 11-under 205 and earned $315,000.Alker closed with a 68.Steve Stricker, coming off a week in Rome as an assistant Ryder Cup captain, finished outside the top 10 for the first time this year. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Alvin Kamara told the Saints coaching staff he wanted to touch the football more this week. They gave him what he wanted, and the running back provided the spark New Orleans’ dormant offense had been missing. Kamara rushed for a touchdown to become the Saints’ career TD leader, Derek Carr had two scoring passes and New Orleans routed the New England Patriots 34-0 on Sunday.Tyrann Mathieu added a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown to help New Orleans (3-2) chase Patriots quarterback Mac Jones from the game — the second straight week coach Bill Belichick sidelined Jones in the second half. Kamara said he expected “tough conversations” in the locker room following a 26-9 loss to Tampa Bay last week. The response was exactly what he hoped it would be.“Anytime you find yourself in a lull or rut … you’ve got to find a way to fix it fast,” Kamara said. “Sometimes you get those ruts and it compounds and it starts to just turn into your identity....Young and Plum each score 26 points as Aces dominate Liberty 99-82 in WNBA Finals opener

President Joe Biden and his aides have long tried to bring some calm to the Middle East, in large part so that the United States could focus more intensely on the greater long-term challenge: China. That strategy is now in danger due to this weekend’s stunning attack on Israel by the Palestinian militants of Hamas. As Israel retaliates, the possibility of a wider regional war looms, demanding more of Biden’s attention. Hundreds of people have died. Biden and his team will inevitably have less bandwidth to focus on Beijing. And that’s as the Biden administration’s attention already is stretched due to Russia’s war in Ukraine. It’s a frustrating dynamic for a White House that had notched what it believed were major, often unsung successes in the Middle East. (And hardly a novel one: Many presidents trying to focus their efforts elsewhere have been vexed by the Middle East.) That included freezing the war in Yemen and making headway on pre-existing efforts to help Israel build ...Latest news
