Oklahoma City’s Holmgren, San Antonio’s Wembanyama shine in preseason matchup of high draft picks OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama and Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren lived up to the hype in their first ever NBA preseason games.Holmgren had 21 points and nine rebounds in 16 first-half minutes, and the Thunder defeated the Spurs 122-121 on Monday night. Wembanyama had 20 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes, mostly in the first half.Wembanyama was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft. Holmgren was the No. 2 pick in the 2022 draft, but he suffered a foot injury in the offseason and missed all of last season. The 7-foot-1 Holmgren won the opening tip against the 7-4 Wembanyama, but the two did not match up often. Both showed off their wide range of skills, from handling the ball and driving through traffic to making 3-pointers. Holmgren looked to score in the early minutes while Wembanyama mostly deferred to his teammates.Holmgren scored first when he made one of two free throws. It was Atlanta’s first extra-b...

Fall allergies worse than spring, local doctor says People who suffer from seasonal allergies are finding that the misery is lasting longer than it used to. Because of warmer temperatures, the pollen season is starting earlier and ending later each year.“The pollen season in D.C. is extended. It used to start in March or April and end in early October. It now starts at the end of February and goes through November — most people think because of global warming,” said Dr. Henry Fishman, an allergy and immunology specialist based in the District.“Also, in addition to noticing from experience, the national studies show the number of people with allergies has actually doubled in the last 20 years. So the season is longer and people are suffering more,” he added. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture says that not only are pollen seasons longer, research indicates the seasons carry 21% more pollen than they did in 1990.“All I know is I’m busy all day, every day,” said Fishman, who maintains...

Misty Copeland’s dedication to inclusion spans many projects — and her push for new dance emojis NEW YORK (AP) — Misty Copeland has her hands (and feet!) in many different projects simultaneously, but all are motivated by her passion to use her platform to promote diversity in all the spaces she inhabits. The first Black woman to be promoted to principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre in 2015, Copeland says she never takes that opportunity for granted. Beyond performing, she says she feels a responsibility to show the importance of representation, and work on projects that are an extension of who she is as a dancer. Her influence has transcended the stage to author, head of her own production company and charitable foundation, and now co-founder and designer of a new athletic wear brand, Greatness Wins, that focuses on clothing for women of all ages and body types.Copeland also likes to try new things that scare her so she’s taken on the role of interviewer on a new show called “PBS Arts Talk,” where she recently interviewed painter Nathaniel Mary Quinn and dancer and cho...

For years, Israelis trusted the army to defend and inform them. Now many feel abandoned

For years, Israelis trusted the army to defend and inform them. Now many feel abandoned JERUSALEM (AP) — It was, they thought, an ironclad social contract. Israeli citizens would serve in the military and live along enemy borders. In exchange, the army would defend them. That contract was shattered Saturday when hundreds of Hamas militants breached Israel’s defenses from the Gaza Strip, pouring in by air, land and sea on a rampage that would leave hundreds dead. The infiltration caught Israel’s storied high-tech army completely unaware and stunned a country that prides itself on military prowess. Further shocking Israelis was how long it took the military to respond. As thousands in southern Israel suddenly found themselves besieged, their cries for help went unanswered for hours. Holed up inside homes and safe rooms as militants sprayed bullets, torched homes and hurled grenades, they turned in desperation to social media, to journalists and to friends, beseeching the army to save them. The weekend attacks and the military’s response brought an unsettling new sen...
