ATHENS — Greece’s conservative ruling party achieved a huge victory in Sunday’s election, but it will have to wait for a second vote later this summer in its bid to secure an outright majority. The New Democracy party of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis managed to gain a double-digit lead over its main rival, the left-wing Syriza party, and was missing only a few seats for a majority even with the new proportional representation system, according to early results.“The political earthquake that occurred today calls on all of us to accelerate the process for a final governmental solution,” Mitsotakis declared Sunday evening from his party headquarters.“The data from the ballot box is catalytic — it proves that New Democracy has the approval to govern independently and strongly and they demanded it emphatically, in an absolute way,” he said. With 75 percent of the votes counted, New Democracy was poised to get 40.8 percent of the vote and 145 seats in the 300-seat parliament. Published Fri, 01 Nov 2024 06:19:46 GMT
MIAMI — More than 30 minutes after the final buzzer sounded, Jaylen Brown took a seat at his locker. He had just taken a shower, and was only in a towel. The Celtics All-Star was still trying to process what had just happened. He sat there, staring into the abyss. He shook his head, still in frustration.Moments later, he picked himself up, got dressed and took the walk to the visitors’ podium inside the Kaseya Center, where he would try to explain the devastation he just experienced, a 128-102 loss to the Heat that put the Celtics in a shocking 3-0 series hole in the Eastern Conference Finals. But Brown, always thoughtful in his words, struggled with how to describe his feelings. He and the Celtics’ pride were questioned. It looked like they had quit. There was a clear disconnect on the court. Brown paused for more than five seconds after the first question.“I don’t even know where to start,” Brown began.“An obvious letdown. I feel like we let our fan base, organization down, w...Mike Preston: David Ojabo could be the missing piece the Ravens have lacked for years | COMMENTARY

A lot of eyes will be focused on quarterback Lamar Jackson or wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. when the Ravens open training camp in late July, but the most intriguing player will be second-year outside linebacker David Ojabo. If he plays up to his potential, Ojabo could become the elite, young pass rusher the Ravens have coveted since Terrell Suggs left Baltimore after the 2018 season.“If they’re not setting their goals high enough and your vision isn’t big enough for your players, you’re not doing the right things, especially as a coach,” Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald said. “So, of course we have big visions for ‘Ja’ and the things that we want him to be able to do.”The Ravens have had their share of strong pass rushers, including defensive end Michael McCrary, defensive tackle Sam Adams and outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil and Justin Houston. But Suggs and fellow outside linebacker Peter Boulware were even more sp...Facebook parent hit with record $1.3 billion fine by European regulators

LONDON (AP) — The European Union slapped Meta with a record $1.3 billion privacy fine Monday and ordered it to stop transferring user data across the Atlantic, the latest salvo in a decadelong case sparked by U.S. cybersnooping fears. The penalty fine of 1.2 billion euros from Ireland's Data Protection Commission is the biggest since the EU's strict data privacy regime took effect five years ago, surpassing Amazon's 746 million euro penalty in 2021 for data protection violations. The Irish watchdog is Meta's lead privacy regulator in the 27-nation bloc because the Silicon Valley tech giant's European headquarters is based in Dublin.Meta, which had previously warned that services for its users in Europe could be cut off, vowed to appeal and ask courts to immediately put the decision on hold.“There is no immediate disruption to Facebook in Europe,” the company said. And he goes, you made it. I go, what? I'm like, seriously? He's like, yeah, you did. He had to tell me five times that I made it," said Block. Western countries will run "colossal risks" if they supply Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets (pictured), TASS news agency quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko as saying on Saturday (20 May).Grushko was responding to a question about the implications of providing the jets, which Ukraine has been requesting from NATO countries. It has not yet won commitments for delivery of the planes, but US President Joe Biden told G7 leaders on Friday (19 May) that Washington supports joint allied training programs for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s, senior US officials said."We see that Western countries are still adhering to the escalation scenario. It involves colossal risks for themselves," Grushko was quoted as saying."In any case, this will be taken into account in all our plans, and we have all the necessary means to achieve the goals we have set."Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Colonel Yuri Ignat told Espreso TV "we will win this war" once Kyiv deploys F-16 fighters, since they cou...Latest news
