Kenneth Ring was in his mid-40s when he started to get interested in near-death experiences and the possibility of an afterlife. Death wasn’t something to fear, even his own.“I don’t believe near-death experiences prove anything like (an afterlife), but if you look at the evidence and you look at the testimony of near-death experiencers, it’s pretty hard not to think that life is not a dead end, that life continues,” says Kentfield resident Kenneth Ring, the preeminent authority on near-death experiences. Just like us, dogs have a wide range of body language and vocalizations. Barking is a dog’s voice. In some situations, you might want your dog to bark (intruder alert). In others, it might create problems (at a neighbor).Dogs bark for a variety of reasons, including alerting to an intruder, excitement, loneliness, anxiety, fear and fun. Some breeds were developed to be guard dogs or alert barkers. They’re more sensitive to sounds or intruders and will often bark first and ask questions later. In addition, barking is a self-reinforcing behavior. Some dogs simply enjoy “talking.” Hoping the behavior will go away on its own will likely fail. Yelling at your dog for barking simply teaches them that you can bark, too. So, how do you modify the behavior?First, figure out what kind of barking your dog is doing.• Alert barking: letting you know they’ve seen or heard something out of the ordinary.• Defensive barking: trying to make something they’re afraid of or don’t like go away.• Frustrat...Walters: PG&E rate change tied to Legislature’s abusive ‘trailer bills’

Few people inside or outside the Capitol were paying much attention last year when Assembly Bill 205 popped up on the California Senate floor on June 29.The measure had been sitting in the Senate for more than four months, one of many so-called “trailer bills” legally connected to the state budget but having little, if any, policy connection to the budget.Over the previous decade, after voters — perhaps unwittingly — reduced the legislative vote requirement for budgets from two-thirds to a simple majority, it had become common practice for governors and legislative leaders to put sweeping policy changes into trailer bills to make their passage easier.Trailer bills need just simple majority votes, take effect immediately on being signed by the governor, and are typically taken up in rapid fire order with little or no serious discussion.Typically, AB 205 was, in fact, a major revision of how regulated utilities, such as Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and Southern California ...Donald Trump will face judge in historic court appearance over charges he mishandled secret documents

By ERIC TUCKER and ALANNA DURKIN RICHER | Associated PressMIAMI (AP) — Donald Trump was set to make his first court appearance Tuesday in a historic criminal case charging the former president with hoarding top secret government documents, boastfully displaying them to visitors and trying to hide them from investigators who demanded them back.Trump approached his Miami court date with characteristic bravado, insisting as he has done through years of legal woes that he has done nothing wrong and was being persecuted for political purposes. But the gravity of the moment is unmistakable as he answers to 37 felony counts that accuse him of willfully retaining classified records that prosecutors say could have jeopardized national security if exposed. The case is laden with political implications for Trump, who currently holds the dominant spot in the early days of the 2024 Republican presidential primary. But it also poses profound legal consequences given the prospect of a years-long pr...California man accused of crossing state lines to pick up 13-year-old runaway girl for sex
