SF Giants swept by A’s, choke away three-run lead to MLB’s worst team

OAKLAND — Alex Cobb sat and stewed. All he could do was watch as the Giants’ lead evaporated in the sixth inning of an eventual 8-6 loss Sunday afternoon to the Oakland A’s.Removed with one out in the sixth, after throwing only 77 pitches, the Giants’ All-Star starter watched from the bench in the first-base dugout as Brandon Crawford bounced a throw to first base. He rested his head in his hands as Luke Jackson, called on to relieve him, walked back-to-back batters, forcing in a run.Cobb remained there for all of it, unable to do anything about it, as the ugly inning culminated in a go-ahead base hit from Shea Langeliers, unloading the bases with a line drive over the glove of a leaping J.D. Davis, after manager Gabe Kapler refused to pull his erratic reliever from the game. All told, the Giants (61-51) wasted one of their best offensive performances of the past month-plus, as well as both of their best opportunities to pick up wins before beginning a daunting stret...

Oakland A’s legends watch team even Bay Bridge Series behind Allen’s home runs

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 20:24:55 GMT

OAKLAND – Before Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland A’s inducted five legendary Athletics into the team’s hall of fame.Jason Giambi, the 2000 AL MVP who hit 241 home runs in eight seasons in the East Bay, was among those honored. If one had to pick a current A’s player to replicate one of Giambi’s moonshots, 5-8 Nick Allen would probably not be near the top of the list. But after hitting just a single home run in his first 59 games, Allen tripled his season total, slamming two over the left field wall with a who’s-who of A’s legends in attendance. His surprising home runs keyed an 8-6 Oakland (32-80) win that tied the two-game series against the Giants (61-51). While the pregame was all about celebrating the past, great performances from young players gave the fans a glimpse into what could be a bright future. The Oakland offense’s unexpected shot in the arm from light-hitting Allen was even more surprising given his splits and who he was facin...

Giambi, Henderson opine on Oakland A’s likely relocation to Las Vegas

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 20:24:55 GMT

OAKLAND — A warm applause greeted Jason Giambi as Tony La Russa introduced him as the Oakland A’s latest Hall of Fame inductee. It was a bit surprising given the way Giambi left a 102-win Oakland team for the New York Yankees and a lucrative contract 12 years ago.Giambi fleeing town was a slap in fans’ faces, so his comments in March that the team’s potential relocation to Las Vegas would “be amazing” served as a gut punch. Giambi doubled down on his pro-Vegas thoughts in the minutes before the A’s Hall of Fame ceremony on Sunday afternoon prior to the final Bay Bridge Series game against the San Francisco Giants.“If you’re a fan, you’re going to follow your team no matter what,” Giambi said. “That’s the part that’s exciting, the buzz in Vegas. There are a lot of great players that have come out of there. (Bryce) Harper, (Joey) Gallo, Kris Bryant. It’s not just California that has great baseball, a lot of great baseball is ...

The future is uncertain for the United States after crashing out of the Women’s World Cup

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The rest of the world has finally caught up to the United States. The once-dominant Americans crashed out of the Women’s World Cup on penalties after a scoreless draw with Sweden in the Round of 16 on Sunday. It was the earliest exit ever for the four-time tournament champions. A shootout in the 1999 World Cup — with a much different outcome — supercharged the U.S. team’s prominence atop the sport globally. The Americans defeated China on penalties in front of a sellout crowd at the Rose Bowl and Brandi Chastain doffed her jersey in celebration. Except for some desperate energy in the final match, this U.S. team looked uncharacteristically timid and disorganized throughout this World Cup. The two-time defending champions squeaked by in the group stage with just a win against Vietnam and disappointing draws against both the Netherlands and Portugal. The Americans fell victim to growing parity in women’s soccer. NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón exited his start against the Houston Astros in the third inning Sunday with left hamstring tightness.Rodón threw a 96 mph fastball to Chas McCormack well outside the strike zone and appeared to stiffen up as he began circling the area behind the pitcher’s mound. An athletic trainer and New York manager Aaron Boone came out to check on Rodón, who threw two warmup pitches. That was followed by a second meeting, where they were joined by plate umpire Angel Hernandez.Rodón was then replaced by rookie Jhony Brito.“It was more of a precautionary thing,” Rodón said after New York’s 9-7 loss. “In this moment I feel normal, but one of those things we’ll have to see what tomorrow holds.”After being examined at Yankee Stadium by a doctor, Rodón will get additional tests in the next 24 hours, the team said.
