‘What are we leaving for future generations?’: Maryland city is mandating composting Taking out the trash is getting more complicated for some folks in Maryland.Mandatory organics composting is on the way to the city of Laurel, according to an ordinance approved by the mayor and city council last month. The city says Laurel will be the first municipality to make composting a requirement. The composting law takes effect on July 1, 2025, leaving plenty of time for residents to get used to the idea and for the city to work out all the kinks on its end. The city said it will step up information and education campaigns to ensure everyone is ready to regularly separate organic waste from their other trash.City Environmental Programs Manager Michele Blair said the path to this law started four years ago with a composting pilot program.“We started out with 200 people in 2019. We then grew the program, doubled it and now we’re well into reaching 500 residents,” Blair says.Right now, the city borders on 30,000 residents and about 7,000 single family and town homes that t...

PGA Tour rookie Carl Yuan leads by 1 at Canadian Open; McIlroy 3 back TORONTO (AP) — Carl Yuan moved into position to turn around a forgettable rookie year on the PGA Tour, shooting a 5-under 67 in cool, rainy conditions on Friday to take a one-shot lead at the midway point of the RBC Canadian Open.Two-time defending champion Rory McIlroy gave himself a chance heading into the weekend at Oakdale. He shot 67 and was three shots back of Yuan’s two-day total of 9-under 135.“I felt like I putted pretty well (Thursday). But iron play was better, wedges were definitely better, got it in play a little more off the tee,” said McIlroy, who had never seen the course before the opening round. “So yeah, it was a better, more solid round.”Corey Conners, seeking to become the first Canadian to win his national open since 1954, shot 69 and was one shot back. Judge rejects challenge to Prop HH tax relief plan DENVER (KDVR) — A judge on Friday rejected a challenge to the Colorado property tax relief plan set to go before voters this fall.Proposition HH would lower property tax rates for the next 10 years and backfill local government revenues with surplus tax money — funds normally refunded to Coloradans under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Mayor-elect Mike Johnston announces transition team Conservative group Advance Colorado and 12 counties sued over the effort. They argued the measure addresses too many topics, in violation of the Colorado Constitution, which requires a single subject and clear title for ballot measures.Judge David H. Goldberg disagreed. He issued a ruling Friday without setting the case for a hearing. The Denver District Court judge ruled Prop HH does not violate the constitutional clear title requirements. He said understanding the title does not "require any sort of superior intellect or rhetoric to divine the nature of the proposition."Advance Colorado plans to appe...

Wet spring could lead to more mosquitos along the Front Range DENVER (KDVR) -- Near Interstate 70 and Colorado Boulevard, on the East side of Denver, a small retention pond normally sits empty — but not this year. Historic rainfall has left inches of standing water throughout much of the pond, and with it, a perfect habitat for mosquitos.“An area like this might not be on our radar in previous years,” Brian Tietze said. "In previous years, it'll rain and dry up back to dirt, not even mud. But not this year."Tietze is a public health investigator for Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment, which is committing extra resources to mosquito control this spring.  Ways to repel mosquitoes in Colorado The heavy rainfall in May and early June has created plenty of habitat for the pesky insects, which could lead to higher populations this summer."In our office, we're definitely preparing for it," he said.Is West Nile virus a higher risk this year? But Tietze cautions it's too early to know whether we'll see an elevated risk of West N...

Rafael Devers’ continued success against Gerrit Cole helps Red Sox beat Yankees

Rafael Devers’ continued success against Gerrit Cole helps Red Sox beat Yankees Nearly a year ago, Rafael Devers left Gerrit Cole searching for solutions.“I’m open to suggestions,” the Yankees ace said when asked how he planned to get Devers out moving forward. Devers had just taken Cole deep twice in a Yankees win at Fenway Park on July 7, adding to the Boston third baseman’s success against the pitcher. That success continued on Friday night in the Bronx, as Devers helped the basement-dwelling Red Sox score their first two runs in a 3-2 win over the Yankees.Boston got on the board first when Triston Casas singled off Cole in the fourth inning. That hit drove in Devers, who doubled off Cole earlier in the frame. Devers then homered off Cole in the sixth inning.Cole threw the left-handed hitter a 90.2 mph changeup just below the zone, but that didn’t stop Devers from going the other way for a solo shot.Devers has now crushed seven career homers off Cole. No batter has hit more off the right-hander.While Devers continued to thrive, C...

Chicago White Sox OF/DH Eloy Jiménez is recovering from left lower leg discomfort: ‘We’re looking at probably 4-5 days’ Pedro Grifol wouldn’t categorize Eloy Jiménez’s status as day to day.But the Chicago White Sox manager said it’s possible that the outfielder/designated hitter could return to action in four to five days as he recovers from left lower-leg discomfort.“You still have to see how he progresses,” Grifol said Friday afternoon. “But overall, a pretty good exam. You always want to avoid the DL, but sometimes it’s inevitable. In this particular case, the evaluation was good, it was positive. He’s not day-to-day, we’re looking at probably 4-5 days.”The Sox were without Jiménez for Friday’s series opener against the Miami Marlins at Guaranteed Rate Field. He exited the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the ninth after running slowly to first while trying to beat out a double play. The throw to first was wild and Jiménez reached second, and he was checked ...
