Share the Spirit: Girls on the Run inspires self-confidence and strength in girls — at the age it’s needed most At just past 4 on an October afternoon, a dozen girls began to run. They were told to circle a piece of Danville’s Sycamore Valley Park. But unlike track practice, where the task might be paired with fierce faces and intense competition, the girls — who all ranged between 10 and 11 years old — ran their laps with a different attitude.“When you run, you feel good,” said Milena Molerovich, an 11-year-old from Alamo. “But when you share that gift with other people, that’s even better.”Girls on the Run participants Yumo Li, 9, from left, Milena Molerovich, 11, and Samantha Phillips, 10, work on writing down ideas for a community service poster during a Girls on the Run meeting in Danville, Calif., on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023. Girls on the Run is an organization that instills confidence in girls through running while also inspiring them to build their confidence, kindness and decision making skills. Oakland calls for Gaza ceasefire, joins growing wave of support for peace OAKLAND — As Israel’s devastating assault in Gaza remained on a temporary pause, Oakland on Monday became the second Bay Area city to signal support for Palestinians by calling for a ceasefire to violence in the region, where thousands of civilians have been killed. In a unanimous vote, the City Council approved a statement that demands an immediate ceasefire, the “release of all hostages” and the “restoration of food, water, electricity, and medical supplies” that have been throttled by Israel during the country’s prolonged retaliation to the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.“I want Jewish children to live as much as I want Palestinian children to live, but we’ve got to acknowledge the imbalance and disproportionate death on one side — we’ve got to,” Councilmember Carroll Fife, the resolution’s author, said of the call for peace.Hundreds of pro-Palestine attendees Monday celebrated the resolution’s passage, a rare show of...

Why the San Jose Sharks are seeing some much better results

Why the San Jose Sharks are seeing some much better results SAN JOSE – Maybe the San Jose Sharks have reached a turning point in their season. Or maybe a big wake-up call is right around the corner. But after getting off to one of the worst starts in NHL history, the Sharks are suddenly on a season-long three-game point streak and close to climbing out of the league’s basement.Fabian Zetterlund and Luke Kunin both scored and goalie Mackenzie Blackwood finished with 33 saves as the Sharks got past the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Monday to close out a three-game homestand with a 2-0-1 record.San Jose is now 5-5-1 — with all five wins coming at home – since general manager Mike Grier met with his players on Nov. 6. The Sharks have 12 points, the same amount as the Chicago Blackhawks prior to Tuesday’s games.“It wasn’t our best game by any means, but we found a way to win,” said Kunin, whose third-period goal gave the Sharks the lead for good. “So hopefully we can build off some things, learn from some things, and keep that good ...

Behind Kevon Looney’s rivalry with Domantas Sabonis: A grudge that dates back to the 2015 Sweet 16

Behind Kevon Looney’s rivalry with Domantas Sabonis: A grudge that dates back to the 2015 Sweet 16 SAN FRANCISCO — Kevon Looney hesitated to look at his phone before Game 1 of the Golden State Warriors’ playoff series against the Sacramento Kings last spring. He knew a slew of text messages from his AAU coaches, Ward Jenkins and Shelby Parrish, awaited him.“Don’t let (Domantas) Sabonis kick your (expletive) again,” Looney recalls the texts saying. But at this point, the messages from his childhood mentors were routine.“They’ve been saying that since I got in the NBA. For nine years they’ve been saying that to me,” Looney said. “Every time, I think of that every time.”The numbers tell us Looney is at his best against the Kings, and with a win in Sacramento tonight possibly advancing the Warriors in the in-season tournament, that edge could be a difference-maker.In last year’s playoffs, Looney’s dominance on the boards helped Golden State turn a first-round 2-0 deficit into a thrilling seven-game series win. That run...

Newsom announces more funding in effort to clear encampments near highways (BCN) -- The state is making nearly $300 million in additional grant money available for local governments to clear homeless encampments, with a focus on areas near state highways and Interstate Highways, and provide housing options for people who are impacted. About half of the "encampment resolution" money announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday will be dedicated to the effort to clear encampments on what the state refers to as rights-of-way, which are public roads, highways and Interstate Highways owned and maintained by Caltrans.
