TIFF’23: The Zone of Interest is the most idiosyncratic Holocaust film in history

It’s been nearly 80 years since the end of the Holocaust, the deadliest and most devastating mass genocide in human history. 6 million Jewish people were killed, as well as 5.7 million Soviet civilians, and up to 3 million Polish people among many others. It’s important to not forget the evil of the Holocaust, lest something like this happen again. But what is not known as well about the Holocaust are the people who perpetrated it. We all know it was the Nazis who committed this genocide in an efficient manner, keeping records of daily deaths. But when they weren’t counting the bodies and stealing the clothes and valuables left behind, what kind of people were they? How did they sleep at night? The Zone of Interest is one of the more horrifying films I've ever seen, but not because of what it shows. It's because of what it doesn't show. #TIFF23— James Mackin @ TIFF 23 (@JamesMackin10) September 11, 2023The Zone of Interest is a Holocaust drama unli...Highland Park parade shooting suspect to return to court

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic emerged from an exhilarating and exhausting U.S. Open final with a 24th Grand Slam title on Sunday night, using every ounce of his energy and some serve-and-volley guile to get past Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in a match that was more closely contested than the straight-set score indicated.Djokovic, a 36-year-old from Serbia, moved one major singles title in front of Serena Williams to become the first player to win 24 in the Open era, which began in 1968. Margaret Court also collected a total of 24, but 13 of those came before professionals were admitted to the Slam events. There were moments, particularly in the 1-hour, 44-minute second set that was as much about tenacity as talent, when Djokovic appeared to be faltering. After some of the most grueling points — and there were many — he would lean over with hands on knees or use his racket for support or pause to stretch his legs. This triumph against Medvedev, the o...Will the Vikings have center Garrett Bradbury for their next game?

Maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Vikings looked out of sorts on offense in the early stages of Sunday’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.A couple of possessions into the game, starting center Garrett Bradbury walked into the medical tent with a lower back injury and did not return in the 20-17 loss. Now his status for Thursday’s primetime game against the Philadelphia Eagles is up in the air.“I would classify him as day-to-day,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said. “Whether Garrett is able to turn over on a short week or it’ll be (backup center Austin Scholttmann) out there, whatever combination we decide to go with, we’ll put together the plan that works while hopefully getting Garrett back as soon as we can.”Asked how he thought Scholttmann played in relief, quarterback Kirk Cousins praised him for stepping up.“We have great players,” Cousins said. “I think Austin Schlottmann did a...Clayton Memorial Stair Climb honors firefighters killed on 9/11

CLAYTON, Mo. – The Clayton Fire Department Memorial 9/11 Stair Climb took place at Enterprise Center Sunday morning. The event pays tribute to the fallen heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.Each person taking part in the climb walked the 2,220 steps at the venue, which is equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center Towers. It's all to commemorate and honor the selflessness of the 343 members of the New York Fire Department who lost their lives that day."Everybody's carrying a badge that has a name of one of the firefighters," Charlie Coghill, Clayton Fire Department, said. "It's kind of our tribute to them that every other firefighter, even across the country, wherever these kinds of events are taking place, they're trying to walk in their same shoes and try to honor them in that way."Abby Stolte and Amy Heggemeyer are both married to firefighters with the Clayton Fire Department. Kareem Jackson knew his team needed the ball back.Third-and-8 from the Las Vegas 44-yard line, Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hit Jakobi Meyers over the middle and Jackson laid out to try to stop him short of the first down.Jackson, though, hit Meyers high and Meyers crumpled to the turf. Players from both teams gathered around before he was able to sit up on his own and walk off the field with help from trainers.A scary situation and a costly 15-yard penalty on Jackson. A stop the Broncos desperately needed and failed to get — Las Vegas ran the final 2 minutes, 54 seconds off the clock thanks to a Garoppolo first-down run a minute later to secure a 17-16 victory. But also, hopefully, a serious injury avoided.“I just want to say I hope he’s alright,” Jackson told reporters afterward. “Obviously we don’t play this game to hurt guys. It’s a tough sport we play. … Unfortunately stuff like that happens. Definitely sending my thoughts and prayers ...Rookie right-hander struggles again as Oakland A’s lose to Texas Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas — Oakland Athletics rookie right-hander Luis Medina had a rough start to Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers, and the ending was not much better.Medina allowed three runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth in what became a 9-4 A’s loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Field, as Texas won consecutive games for the first time in September.Former Athletic Marcus Semien homered twice among his four hits, and Corey Seager went deep for the 30th time this season.Andrew Heaney (10-6), the odd man out of the Rangers rotation with All-Star right-hander Nathan Eovaldi back from the injured list, struck out six over 3 2/3 scoreless innings after taking over for Jon Gray in the third. It was the first relief appearance for the left-hander after 27 starts this season.Semien matched his career high with four hits for the second time in four games. SAN FRANCISCO — What can a team meeting accomplish? A regular feature of many clubhouses over the years, it’s something that’s easy to credit when it’s followed by success and equally easy to dismiss when it doesn’t lead to the desired results.“I’ve always been against meetings,” Giants reliever Luke Jackson said before their series finale against the Rockies, ESPN’s Sunday night game of the week. “I’ve been a part of most meetings and we lose afterward and they’re terrible. But this year, we’re 2-0 after meetings.”The latest, first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, came Friday, before their first game against Colorado, and the message came from on high. President Farhan Zaidi was first to address the group, but speakers also included longtime coach Ron Wotus and a handful of veterans. What followed were back-to-back wins, their first of September after starting the month with six straight losses. The team also responded to...Hercules police chase ends with officer using taser on stolen vehicle suspect
