Rookie J. P. France shuts down A’s and Tucker delivers go-ahead two-run double as Astros win 3-1 By JANIE McCAULEY | AP Baseball WriterOAKLAND — J.P. France knew he had been more reliable on the road than in Houston so far this season — and showed it again, even after getting in an early hole.Relying on his nasty change-up, the rookie struck out five while pitching into the eighth inning for the first time to win his third straight decision, Kyle Tucker hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth, and the Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 on Thursday night. The right-hander owns a 2.05 ERA over the first eight road starts of his career, which is lowest in the majors by a starting pitcher with a minimum of 40 innings.“You’ve got to go out there and just take every game as it is. I knew on the road I was pitching a little better, but that’s awesome.”Alex Bregman homered in the ninth to help secure the win for France (5-3). France, a 28-year-o...

The agencies prioritized areas statewide for vegetation control to reduce the ability for fires to spread quickly. As part of this program, Caltrans is reducing roadside vegetation on state-owned land in locations along Highway 13 in Oakland.
This includes mowing, removing low-hanging limbs from trees that assist a fire to climb into the canopy, removing dead and dying trees and thinning dense tree stands. Trimming and removal...

AP PHOTOS: Little relief as record temperatures sizzle around the world A wave of heat is not loosening its grip on the globe. People around the world sought shade and water for respite, including in Lebanon, Spain and Turkey, where even those used to high temperatures felt the unusually sweltering summer. There was some light relief, too, in Israel, where people took to the beach in mermaid tails. This June was the hottest on record, and July is expected to be even hot...
