Southern Republicans look to nationalize 2023 governors’ races by invoking Biden

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — President Joe Biden’s name won’t appear on the ballot anywhere in 2023, but you wouldn’t know it from the campaigns that Republican candidates for governor are running in Kentucky and Mississippi.GOP nominees in both states — Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron and first-term Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves — are just as likely to mention the Democratic president as they are to name the person they face in the Nov. 7 general election.Tying candidates for governor to national political figures is a well-worn strategy but also reflects an era of deepening ideological divides, according to Carrie Archie Russell, an expert on southern politics at Vanderbilt University. She says forging such links, even when there’s no evidence of a strong connection, allows candidates to create a “mental shortcut for identifying individuals as ‘us’ or ‘them.’”In 2020, then-President Donald Trump won 62% of the vote in Kentucky and 58% in Mississippi...Cat reunited with owner after viral search following Lyft trip

Andrea Nakhla formulates compositions using hybrid means—blending elements, tools, and techniques along a continuum of real, hyperreal, and surreal in scenes of heightened symbolism and inscrutable, urgent events. With the strange logic of a dream, her sensibility references the way digital visions render space in vectors, along with how the hands work up gestures in paint. With arcades and windows opening onto far and level horizons of de Chirico-like sands, her rooms are built of patterned planes, torqued angles, paintings within paintings, stylized furniture, and poetic objects of mystery. These palaces of invention have a jazzy, interpretive relationship to conventions of landscape and architecture, and are inhabited by sleek, anthropoid figures in ceremonial poses. Also like in dreams, Nakhla’s scenes tease a fusion of the invented and remembered, enacting meditations on the mind-body connection and the ultimate source of meaning. Her work is currently on view at Luna Anais Gal...Latest news
