Maserati-driving suspects fail to steal catalytic converter in Berkeley, threaten witness with guns

BERKELEY — Two men driving a Maserati SUV failed to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle Thursday morning and pointed guns at a man walking his dog before fleeing, police said.The attempted theft, from a Toyota Prius, happened about 6:08 a.m. Thursday in the area of Bancroft Way and McGee Avenue in central Berkeley.Police said the men could not steal the converter because it was equipped with a theft prevention device.While the men were trying to steal the converter, a man walking his dog passed by, prompting the suspects to brandish a rifle and pistol at the man, police said. The man was not injured.The men then sped off in the white Maserati SUV, which had paper plates. They are being sought, police said. Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not released.So far this year there have been 231 catalytic converter thefts in Berkeley, authorities said. The State of California has filed a legal action to revoke the license for Atria Park of San Mateo, following the high-profile incident in which two residents died.The poisoning occurred in August of 2022. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A former Minneapolis police officer pleaded guilty Thursday to criminal vehicular homicide after a police pursuit killed an innocent bystander two years ago.In exchange for the plea, a second-degree manslaughter charge against Brian Cummings was dismissed.Prosecutors said Cummings was pursuing a suspected car thief on July 6, 2021, when he ran a red light and hit a car driven by Leneal Frazier, 40, of St. Paul, who died at the scene.
