(CNN) — A shoe belonging to a child and dating back more than 2,000 years has been unearthed in Austria with its laces still intact. The design of the leather shoe, whose size roughly corresponds to EU 30 (US 12), suggests it was likely made in the 2nd century BC, according to the German Mining Museum Bochum-Leibniz Research Museum for Geo-resources.The shoe was excavated by archeologists in the western village of Dürrnberg, where rock salt mining took place from as early as the Iron Age, it said in a recent press release. The salt, which is particularly good at preserving organic remains, is thought to have kept the shoe in extremely good condition.“Our research activities at Dürrnberg have been providing us with valuable finds for decades in order to scientifically explore the earliest mining activities. The condition of the shoe found is outstanding,” Professor Thomas Stoellner, head of the Research Department at the German Mining Museum, said in the press release.Excavation w...$10,000 bill from Great Depression era sells for $480,000 at auction

By John Warner, Chicago TribuneI have spent the entirety of the 53-plus years I’ve been on this Earth immune to the lure of inspirational self-help books. When it comes to inspiration to be better, I tend to respond with “Nah, I’m good.”I’m a secure, well-adjusted human — or maybe I’m just lazy. Either way, the outcome is the same. But a veritable flood of 2023 books by Peloton instructors has me reconsidering my no self-help books stance because I cannot deny my fascination with these people who talk to me through the screen, encouraging me on my “fitness journey” just about every day.Yes, friends, after years of indifferent exercise following my high school and college (club) sports careers, I am in the midst of a 129-week streak of Peloton workouts. In 2023 I’m on track to log more than 20,000 minutes of activity on the platform. The most current release is Cody Rigsby’s “XOXO, Cody: An Opinionated Homosexual’s Guide to Self-Love, Relationships, and Tactful Pettiness,” a title that ...Great American Beer Fest spotlights Black brewers in special section this year

Despite being a longtime beer drinker and brewery owner, Celeste Beatty has only attended the Great American Beer Festival in Denver once in its 40-plus-year history. In 2001, she founded Harlem Brewing Co. and began contracting with other beer makers to bring her original recipes to market. Beer has been Beatty’s way of connecting with her heritage and community. As a Black woman, she looks to the Harlem Renaissance, the Sugar Hill district, and icons like baseball players Buck Leonard and Josh Gibson for inspiration in her craft.Beatty has always wanted to share her beers – and the unique stories they honor – with drinkers at GABF, but was unsure if she’d fit in with the “big guys” who typically serve there. This year, however, Beatty jumped at the opportunity to pour on the festival floor after learning there would be an area dedicated to brewers of color.Harlem Brewing Co. will be one of five booths in the first National Black Brewers Association Pavilion, which will inhabit 360 ...Mac Jones gets good news at Patriots practice ahead of Jets game

Lauren Ward | Bankrate (TNS)Before you take on a new project, it’s important to understand the differences between a remodel versus renovation. Not only does each one come with its own range of costs, time frames and permit rules, but they may also differ in the value you’ll recoup from your investment. Considerations like these can help guide your decision and determine the scope of the project you choose.Renovation vs. remodelThough often used interchangeably, remodels and renovations are based on the scope of the project. When you think of a home renovation, think of it as a refresh or minor makeover. A renovation typically entails projects that homeowners choose to do themselves, like painting, changing the hardware on kitchen cabinets and updating lighting. These projects are “spruce-ups” for the aesthetics of your home.
